How cat years work
A kitten becomes a teenager within a few months and an adult within a year, which is why the first year of a cat's life is worth roughly fifteen human years. The second year adds another nine, taking a two-year-old cat to about twenty-four. From then on, the maths is simple: add four human years for every cat year. A ten-year-old cat is therefore around fifty-six in human terms – middle aged, not elderly.
Worked example: a seven-year-old moggy
Start with 15 for the first year and 9 for the second, giving 24. Then add five more cat years at four each, which is 20. The total is 44 human years. That cat is in the "mature" stage: still active, but the point at which weight gain, dental disease and early kidney changes start to appear. It is a good age to ask your vet for a baseline blood test.

- Kitten (0–6 months): rapid growth, vaccinations, socialisation and kitten food.
- Junior (6 months–2 years): full size reached, neutering, plenty of play.
- Prime (3–6 years): the healthiest stretch. Keep weight in check.
- Mature (7–10 years): the feline equivalent of our forties. Watch the waistline.
- Senior (11–14 years): six-monthly checks, kidney and thyroid tests.
- Super senior (15+): softer beds, low-sided trays, and comfort first.
Helping your cat age well
- Weigh them regularly. Gradual weight loss in an older cat often means thyroid or kidney disease.
- Keep water everywhere. Cats drink more from wide, shallow bowls away from their food.
- Play daily, even briefly. Hunting games keep older cats mobile and mentally sharp.
- Check teeth. Cats hide dental pain extremely well.
- Make life easy. Steps up to favourite spots and a low-sided litter tray help stiff joints.
Why the number is only half the story
Two cats of the same age can be in very different shape. An indoor cat with a healthy weight and good dental care can be sprightly at sixteen; an overweight cat with arthritis may struggle at ten. If your cat is drinking more, losing weight, hiding or grooming less, book an appointment rather than putting it down to age.
