The first year sets the pattern
Puppies and kittens get their first vaccination at around eight weeks – it can be given from six – followed by a second two to four weeks later, and sometimes a third depending on the vaccine and the local disease picture. Cover is not complete until a week or two after the final one, which is why your vet will give you a date before which the puppy should not walk in public places.
Rescue pets and unknown histories
If you have taken on an adult with no paperwork, ask your vet – they may recommend restarting the course. It is not wasteful; it is the only way to be certain, and vaccinating a pet who turns out to be already covered does no harm.
Fleas are a year-round problem here
A centrally heated British house is a perfectly comfortable flea nursery in January. Treating only in summer leaves a window for an infestation to build up in carpets and bedding, where the vast majority of the flea population lives. Keep treatment going all year, and treat every pet in the house at the same time.
Worming
Adults are usually wormed every three months, more often if they hunt, scavenge or live with young children. Puppies and kittens need worming far more frequently while small. Products differ in what they cover, so follow the schedule your vet sets rather than swapping between shop-bought treatments.
Kennels, day care and travel
Kennel cough vaccination is optional but almost always required by boarding kennels and day care, typically at least a fortnight before the stay. Travel abroad needs rabies vaccination and fresh paperwork for every trip – plan those dates months ahead.
Keeping a record
Print the record below and keep it with the vaccination card. Having the dates in one place makes boarding, insurance claims and changing practice far less stressful, and it is the quickest way to spot a booster that has quietly slipped.
